BANJARMASIN (TABIRkota) – The PDM (Muhammadiyah Regional Council) of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, celebrated the 109th Anniversary of Muhammadiyah, at the yard of Banjarmasin City Hall, on Saturday (January 29, 2022).

Muhammadiyah, whose members often refer to this organization as “persyarikatan” (literally meaning association), is Indonesia’s second-largest grassroots Muslim organization.

The special occasion was attended by Mayor of Banjarmasin Ibnu Sina, Deputy Mayor Arifin Noor, and Chairman of Tablighi Assembly of Muhammadiyah Central Executive, Fathurrahman Kamal.

Muhammadiyah’s birthday is usually celebrated every November.

However, for one reason or another, the celebration of the organization’s 109th anniversary was only carried out by the PDM of Banjarmasin three months later.

Mayor Ibnu Sina said that the role of Muhammadiyah is considered very important in many areas of life in the country.

Muhammadiyah has even also expanded its operations internationally, for example by establishing the University of Muhammadiyah of Malaysia (UMAM), which is the first Indonesian university to open abroad.

“It is undeniable that the persyarikatan of Muhammadiyah plays a big role in improving the quality of education, health, social and religion sectors. This organization has really made its presence felt by all levels of society,” said Mr Ibnu Sina.

Meanwhile, Mr Fathurrahman Kamal told the attendees the history and journey of Muhammadiyah, including its works in different areas of South Kalimantan.

The celebration of the 109th anniversary of Muhammadiyah in Banjarmasin was continued with a “tasyakuran” (thanksgiving ceremony) at Rumah Anno of Siring Tendean, which is located on Martapura river bank. (sahrudin)
